Contemporary
A mother- and daughter-run cafe in a '50s corner building, Electra serves fast, fresh food throughout the day and well into the night. Retro seats and laminex tables set a casual mood with young, friendly staff serving a crowd of young[*], friendly locals spilling out onto the footpath. It's popular for breakfast (look out for the buttermilk pancakes) and lunch – perhaps a gluten-free pizza. Dinner is relaxed, with dishes such as Peking duck in chive and crepe rolls.

Eating Out
441 Dean Street, Albury, NSW

The ambience of this restaurant in the main street of Albury is quirky and fun, with a mish-mash of furnishings from 1950s laminex tables and vinyl chairs to a 1970s lampshade and tea cups delivered on an old souvenir Australian enamel tray. But when it comes to the food, diners can rest assured that no one is pulling their leg. The menu is fresh and contemporary, with many of the dishes Mediterranean or Middle Eastern inspired, such as the chicken tagine with cinnamon honeyed pears and the dukkah-coated confit of duck drizzled with pomegranate molasses. Many of the dishes draw on produce from the surrounding Hume-Murray region, including the very popular Milawa cheese, locally smoked trout and the Gehrig Estate Muscadelle in which the lamb shanks are braised. Even the Calabrian-style sausages, served on creamy mash with a roasted red pepper sauce, are made by a local butcher. Servings were generous and the only dessert we could make room for was the homemade icecream, another source of fun with its little chunks of licorice inside. Service is excellent and there are a few dishes especially for the kids. This tiny restaurant has a noisy buzz, sometimes with live entertainment thrown in.

Modern Australian
'Brash Electra, with its mix-and-match laminate furniture brings a splash of inner-city ecleciticism to Albury. Brekkies and lunches are made with top-notch ciabatta and sour-dough rolls, but Electra does its best work at night, when the menu may feature gamey kangaroo, crisp quail with mint and apple salad, and medallions of Waterfall Creek venison in a red capsicum sauce. An interesting wine list, with Australian and European labels, adds extra spark.'
